A petite French pedestal stand from the Napoleon III period, late 19th century, crafted in ebonized wood with acut-corner top inlaid with engrave bone and brass marquetry. The deep black surface highlights delicate arabesque motifs at the corners, while four barley twist supports are joined by spiral stretchers above a stepped plinth with small turned feet. Nicely proportioned and stable, the piece remains in good timeworn condition with light surface scratches, gentle edge wear, minor inlay losses.
Reflecting the period's taste for exuberant shapes and decorative gravitas, such stands were designed to elevate a prized object such as a bronze, porcelain vase, or small planter within the salon. Its small scale allows it to slip easily beside a bergère or at the end of a settee, providing an elegant perch for a bust, a lamp with a silk shade, or a seasonal bouquet, and bringing an authentic French note to both traditional and contemporary interiors.
Condition and patina consistent with age.
