A spectacular oval side table in dark-stained beechwood, France, Napoléon III period, circa 1860. The molded top sits above a richly carved apron with mascarons, scrolling acanthus, floral ornament and winged female caryatid figures at each end. The S-curved supports finish in bold scroll feet and are joined by a sinuous stretcher centered with a rocaille cartouche.

Exuberant and theatrical, the table reflects the eclectic decorative taste of the Second Empire, combining Renaissance Revival ornament with the curving movement and rocaille vocabulary associated with the Louis XV style. The dark finish gives depth to the carving and heightens the sculptural quality of the piece, from the expressive masks to the flowing acanthus and serpentine stretcher.

Ideal as a lamp or occasional table beside a settee, it would also bring presence to an entry, library or sitting room, styled with a bronze, porcelain vase or stack of books. Its rich patina pairs beautifully with giltwood mirrors, marble accessories and layered textiles, adding character and a decorative French accent to both traditional and collected interiors.

Condition and wear consistent with age and use.
