This handsome near pair of 19th-century Mediterranean agricultural measures is made from hammered copper, with generous, tapering bodies and two curved handles riveted to either side. Their simple construction is particularly appealing, with broad bands reinforcing the upper and lower edges and gently rounded bases, adding an unexpected elegance to their sturdy forms. The two vessels are closely matched but not identical, one being slightly larger than the other. Their warm, darkened copper surfaces have developed a rich, irregular patina, with subtle hammer marks, small dents, traces of verdigris and wear from years of use.
There is something very appealing about the combination of rustic craftsmanship, substantial proportions and simple, graceful lines. Displayed together, these old copper vessels bring a lovely rustic, farmhouse feel to an interior. They would look beautiful in a country kitchen or beside a fireplace, perhaps repurposed as planters, containers for kindling or generous arrangements of dried branches. Their mellow copper tones and textured surfaces would sit particularly well alongside antique pottery, stone and natural wood.
Condition and patina consistent with age.
