This petite counter money box is cast in nickel silver alloy, with a soft silvery tone and quiet luster. The alloy, known as Maillechort in French, was long favored for barware thanks to its bright, silver-like appearance and resistance to corrosion, offering the look of silver without the upkeep or expense. The form is urn-shaped, set on a turned baluster stem and a stepped circular foot, with molded rings defining the shoulder and base. A broad collar at the top forms a shallow dish pierced by a narrow coin slot. The surface carries a timeworn patina with scattered scuffs, small dings, and speckled oxidation consistent with age and use.
From the Belle Époque into the interwar years, money boxes of this type were a familiar sight on bistro counters and in barbershops to collect tips, serving as unassuming markers of daily commerce and sociability. At home, it functions as a handsome coin bank or catch-all, perfect for gathering loose change on an entry console and adding a quiet note of vintage bistro charm.
Condition and patina consistent with age.
