An original lithographic printing stone from the 1930s, created by Omer Bouquey for the Pelican beer brand. This substantial working block carries a reversed advertising illustration, engraved directly into the stone, depicting a lively and humorous tavern scene. Rendered in a playful, graphic manner the image features cartoon-style characters and clear branding elements typical of interwar commercial illustration.
The composition includes a hand-lettered slogan, engraved in reverse for printing, which reads: “Et voici ma dernière création, la reine des bières” (“And here is my latest creation, the queen of beers”), underscoring the promotional intent and theatrical flair of the design. Crisp registration marks and layout lines remain visible, offering a fascinating glimpse into the working process of traditional stone lithography.
Omer Bouquey (1888–1971) was a Belgian lithographer and graphic artist active during the golden age of stone lithography. He worked extensively in advertising, poster design, and commercial illustration, favoring bold linework and narrative, often humorous imagery. His work reflects the visual language of interwar advertising, when cartoons and caricature were widely used to create memorable brand identities, particularly in brewery and café culture. Surviving lithographic stones such as this one are rare and provide a direct, tactile connection to the printmaking methods that preceded photo-offset printing.
The illustration remains crisp and legible, while the stone shows light scuffs, small edge chips, and studio wear consistent with authentic working use—details prized by collectors of graphic and industrial objects. Display it upright on a console, bookshelf, or back bar, or present it on a custom metal stand as a striking focal point. Its bold cartoon imagery and substantial weight pair beautifully with wood, iron, and ceramic, while the timeworn patina adds warmth and authenticity. It may also serve as a sculptural doorstop or bookend, bringing graphic wit and genuine brewing history into the space.
Condition and patina consistent with age.
