This beautiful bust of a young woman is modeled in terracotta with its original polychrome patina. The serene figure lowers her gaze beneath a wrapped turban, her shoulders draped in textured folds that fall to a waisted square plinth. The surface is enriched with nuanced cold-painted coloring in deep bronze-brown, with olive and ochre accents that emphasize the pleats and edges. This piece, stamped and numbered at the back, was published by the renowned Goldscheider manufactory. Small chips to the corners of the base are consistent with age and handling.
Founded in 1885 by Friedrich Goldscheider (1845–1897), the Viennese workshop of Goldscheider became one of the foremost producers of artistic terracotta during the Belle Époque, collaborating with renowned sculptors to create finely modeled busts and figures for an international clientele. This subject reflects the era’s fascination with Orientalism, blending romanticized Near Eastern attire with the classical traditions of portrait sculpture to suit the cosmopolitan taste of fin-de-siècle Vienna. The polychrome patina on terracotta offered the effect of cast metal enlivened by subtle coloration, while the refined drapery and smooth complexion attest to the workshop’s technical mastery and artistic savoir-faire.
Displayed on a console or library shelf, the bust lends a quiet presence and sculptural warmth to both traditional and contemporary interiors. Positioned where directional light can play across its surface, the subtle modeling and textured folds are beautifully revealed. Its restrained palette, dignified profile, and historic patina create a refined focal point that harmonizes seamlessly with collected interiors across periods and styles.
