This impressive National cash register was made in the United States in the late 19th century for export to the French market. Cast in richly detailed brass, it features intricate foliate, scroll, and beaded reliefs rendered with exceptional refinement and craftsmanship. The drawer front bears the elegant scripted National logo alongside a stamped serial number, while the price display is topped by a French-language sign reading Comptant. Designed with equal care and quality on both the clerk’s and customer’s sides, the register combines mechanical function with opulent presentation. The warm gilt-brass tones emerge through a deep, aged patina, and the cylindrical paper-roll cover remains intact on the left side. The mechanism is no longer functioning and the operating crank is missing, making the piece decorative only. Areas of gentle tarnish, surface wear, and minor dings to the brass, along with scattered enamel losses, all speak to its long history of use and contribute to its impressive, storied presence.
A striking piece of late 19th-century industrial design, it captures the technical ingenuity and decorative grandeur of the early retail era. Produced by the National Cash Register Company of Dayton, Ohio, these ornate brass models epitomized Belle Époque retail aesthetics while pioneering reliable register mechanisms, printed receipts, and bell signals, and were exported worldwide.
This piece serves as a sculptural focal point for a boutique counter, bar back, or kitchen island, adding authentic shopkeeping character and a touch of Belle Époque glamour. Substantial and weighty, it commands attention, emphasizing its presence and craftsmanship. It pairs beautifully with oak counters, marble, or dark-painted cabinetry, and can anchor a display with ledger books, apothecary jars, or copperware. In a home library or office, it serves as a conversation piece that reflects the innovation and decorative flair of late 19th-century retail design.
