Pair of 18th-Century Carved Oak Wall Brackets w/ Female Heads, Probably Italian - 14¼"

This characterful pair of 18th-century carved oak wall brackets, probably Italian, is modeled with two individualized female heads emerging from bold scrolling forms. Although clearly conceived as a pair, subtle differences in the faces, carving and proportions, with one slightly taller than the other, give each its own personality and underline their hand-carved character. Small projecting shelves above the heads provide a surface for displaying a vase, small sculpture or candle. The oak has developed a deep brown patina, with beautifully visible tool marks that reveal the hand-carved workmanship, alongside gentle rubbing, old cracks, small losses and historic wormholes consistent with age. The backs retain old iron hanging rings/hooks.

The deeply carved faces and dark oak give them real presence despite their modest scale, while the slight differences between the two add to the charm of the pair. They could flank a mirror, painting or doorway, or even be placed on either side of a bed and fitted with small lights.
