Pair of 18th-Century Carved Wooden Cherubs for Wall Display - 20½"

This pair of carved wooden putti originates form Germany and dates from the 18th century. It was probably conceived as part of a larger or ecclesiastical scheme. Each figure is shown in a flying pose, with raised arms, one leg bent behind and loosely tied drapery around the hips. Their softly modeled bodies, curled hair and expressive faces give the pair a lively sense of movement, while subtle differences in posture and carving emphasize their handmade character. The wood has developed a warm, richly varied patina, with darker areas in the recesses, lighter wear across the more exposed surfaces and several age-related cracks that add to the sense of their long history.

Both figures show losses to the hands, and one has a recent restoration to the drapery, but these details are far less noticeable once mounted at height. Small hooks behind the heads allow for easy wall hanging. Displayed on either side of a large mirror, doorway or bedhead, they would bring movement, depth and a strong sense of history to a layered interior.
