This pair of vintage French or Italian toleware wall sconces, probably dating from the 1950s or 1960s, is formed as branching cream-painted stems set with layered rose-like blossoms and glossy green clover-shaped leaves. Each sconce has two curved light arms with petal-shaped candle sockets, while the floral stems rise in a loose, asymmetrical composition. The finish has aged naturally over time, with scattered chips and areas of wear that are very much part of the pair’s charm, giving the metalwork a softer, timeworn beauty and an appealing shabby-chic character. There is a distinctly romantic, storybook quality to the fanciful mix of rose-like blooms and bright green clover-shaped leaves. The hand-worked metal and naturally worn paint add texture and individuality, giving the pair a relaxed, lived-in charm. They would work beautifully flanking a mirror or bed, bringing softness, movement and an unexpected floral accent.
Condition and patina consistent with age.
Must be rewired and installed in accordance with local electrical requirements.
