Pair of 19th-Century Bronze Cherubs, After Carpeaux, w/ Generous Bronze Casting - 16¼"

This wonderfully decorative pair of late 19th-century bronze musical putti is cast after models associated with the celebrated French sculptor Jean-Baptiste Carpeaux (1827–1875). Each figure is modeled as a winged cherub in animated movement, one playing a long flute and the other raising a small horn or trumpet. Their deeply worked curls, feathered wings, scrolling drapery and expressive poses give the pair a particularly lively character, while the rich brown patina emphasizes the quality and depth of the casting.

Their substantial weight reflects the generous use of bronze and the quality of the casting. Integrated hooks to the backs allow them to be wall mounted, although their weight should be taken into account when installing them. Note: The instruments were made separately and designed to be removable. They now sit loosely in the figures’ hands, and we recommend discreetly securing them for display with a small amount of wax or fine wire.

Their dark patina and expressive, fluid shapes give them an undeniable decorative appeal. They bring a lively, romantic sense of movement to any space. This pair would work beautifully flanking a mirror, placed on a console table, or setting a refined tone in a library or music room.
