Pair Of 19th Century Louis XVI Side Chairs W/ Marie Antoinette Monogram

A refined pair of 19th century side chairs in the Louis XVI style, carved with openwork backs of garlands and ribbons surrounding the interlaced monogram of Marie Antoinette, Queen of France. The chair presents a refined, rectilinear silhouette softened by a gently arched crest rail. Fluted stiles of the backrest rise to carved finials, their vertical rhythm echoed in the fluted front legs, creating a visual continuity between the upper and lower structure. Rosette corner blocks articulate the joints, while a finely worked bead molding runs along the seat rail, reinforcing the chair’s balanced and architectural proportions. Finished in a soft gray with gilt highlights, the painted surface and gilded accents are of recent application, as is the blush-toned seat upholstery. These are faithful reproductions of chairs created for Marie Antoinette’s private retreat at Versailles, le Petit Trianon, marrying neoclassical symmetry with lyrical ornament. Very good overall, with faint marks to the fabric consistent with gentle use. While structurally sound and capable of light use, the chairs are better suited for decorative or occasional purposes.
