A pair of French overpainted photographic portraits from the late 19th-century, presented in their original oval ebonized frames. Each small portrait sits behind convex glass with an oval cream mount. One portrait shows a composed young woman in a grey dress with a wide collar, her posture upright and her gaze calm and direct. The other portrays an older woman in a dark shawl, seated more relaxed, her expression gentle and warm with softly defined features. The frames show minor nicks, the mounts have light age lines and foxing, and the glass has slight clouding in places, the ensemble presenting an authentic, timeworn patina.
The simple black frames reflect the restrained style of the period and may also suggest mourning. Handwritten names and life dates on the reverse add a further layer of personal history.
In the 19th century, photography began as a monochrome medium but soon sought ways to introduce color. Overpainting emerged as one such solution, ranging from delicate retouching to more complete transformation. By combining photographic realism with applied pigments, it produced richly nuanced, hybrid images.
These portraits bring a quiet presence to a space. The contrast between youth and age, formality and softness, gives them an intimate, reflective quality. Their worn surfaces, muted tones, and hand-worked details lend a sense of memory and understated emotion to a room.
Condition and patina consistent with age.
