This generous pair of 19th-century French Louis XV–style armchairs features finely carved walnut frames with a warm, mellow patina. The shaped backs and serpentine seat rails are richly embellished with floral and foliate carving, flowing naturally into elegant cabriole legs with scroll feet, and padded open arms. The proportions are notably wide and inviting, reflecting the late 19th century’s emphasis on domestic comfort. Upholstered in a later soft olive velvet that has aged with character, the seats and armrests show timeworn wear consistent with age and use, lending a relaxed, lived-in elegance. The walnut frames remain in very good condition, their carving crisp yet softened by time.
Made in France in the late 1800s, these chairs exemplify the Louis XV revival, celebrating Rococo curves, fluid silhouettes, and hand-carved detail while offering a more substantial, comfortable scale than their 18th-century predecessors.
Perfect as a conversation pair beside a fireplace, in a library, or flanking a window, these armchairs bring an easy sense of grandeur to both traditional and contemporary interiors. The aged velvet may be preserved for its poetic patina, or replaced with linen or silk to suit a chosen palette, while the handsome walnut frames continue to anchor the room with warmth and movement.
