Pair of Antique French Hand-Colored Woodpecker Engravings in Mirrored Frames - 16¼" x 13½"

This refined pair of early 19th-century French ornithological engravings appears to come from Louis-Pierre Vieillot’s Histoire naturelle des oiseaux de l’Amérique Septentrionale, published in Paris in 1807. Illustrated after Jean-Gabriel Prêtre (1768–1849), engraved by Louis Bouquet (1765–1814), and printed by Langlois, the plates depict birds identified in French as “Le Pic,” meaning “woodpecker” in English. Each is set against an almost entirely blank ground, allowing the finely observed plumage and softly modulated greens, ochres, browns, and warmer tones to stand out.

The sheets show gentle toning and minor spotting and are presented under glass in charming mirrored frames, with small losses to the gilt edges and oxidation to the mirror plates that add to their antique character.

Created at a time when ornithology was becoming increasingly systematic, the plates combine scientific observation with the elegance of French natural-history illustration. The French and Latin names beneath the birds reflect their original encyclopedic purpose, while the generous empty space gives the compositions a light, modern quality. Hung together, the pair would bring gentle color and a scholarly note to a library, study, or country-house interior.
