This pair of petite tripod cassolettes in patinated bronze with gilt bronze mounts dates to the late 19th century. Each rounded blackened body is clasped by three gilt fantastical birds with outspread wings that taper into scaled legs and taloned feet forming the stand. A broad gilt rim crowns the mouth, finely cast with a continuous frieze of griffins and cornucopia. Cassolettes, small ornamental urns, were used for burning incense or as decorative garniture on mantelpieces and desks. This pair presents in good condition, with light rubbing to the gilding, minor surface wear to the patinated bronze. Lids, often supplied on such pieces, may now be lacking.
Compact yet sculptural, they display with elegance on a mantel, console, or desk, whether as standalone objects or with glass liners to hold a sprig of greenery. Their symmetry, contrast of dark patina and warm gilding, and refined Neoclassical detail make them a versatile accent in both traditional and contemporary interiors.
Condition and patina consistent with age.
