This pair of French wrought-iron garden chairs dates from around 1900 and has a particularly fine, substantial construction. Each chair is formed from heavy iron, with gently curving legs, an open lattice seat secured with visible rivets and a tall rounded back articulated by elegant scrolling lines. Small collars and neatly worked joins along the back emphasize the care of the metalwork. The chairs are solid and stable, with the reassuring weight of early garden furniture. Their surface is especially beautiful, retaining layers of old paint that have weathered into a complex patina of turquoise, blue-green and deeper green, with areas of rust and exposed iron adding further depth. A couple of old repairs are visible along the edges of the seats, ensuring the chairs remain fully usable.
What makes this pair particularly memorable is the surface: layers of old paint have weathered into vivid turquoise, blue-green and deeper green, giving the ironwork unusual depth and character. The graceful scrolling backs and open lattice seats keep the silhouette light, while the heavy wrought-iron construction gives the chairs real substance. On a terrace, in a conservatory or around a small indoor table, they would bring an unexpected note of color together with the unmistakable character of old garden furniture.
