Pair of Antique Wrought Iron Garden Tool Heads from France

Two antique wrought iron tool heads from the garden at Chanteduc, Patricia and Walter Wells's farmhouse in Vaison-la-Romaine — collected one by one over the years as part of their long-standing passion for antique farm and garden tools. Both pieces retain their cylindrical sleeves, forged to receive a wooden handle, and each takes a distinct form: one is a two-tined fork with splayed, tapering prongs and a solid, slightly flattened socket; the other pairs a broad, paddle-shaped blade with a two-pronged fork below, its open socket still perfectly intact.

The iron has aged to a deep, mottled rust — warm ochres and burnt sienna against darker, almost charcoal tones — the surface pitted and textured in the way that only decades of outdoor use and weathering can produce. Forged without ornament, these are entirely functional objects, yet the forms have real presence: the weight of the metal, the logic of the shapes, the evidence of long use all speak clearly.

At Chanteduc, Patricia and Walter displayed them not in a shed or on a wall but in the garden itself — stabbed into the pine needles among the bushes in a shady corner, where they became part of the landscape. That instinct translates well to any garden today: grouped in a border, tucked among low planting, or arranged on a stone ledge, these tool heads need no handles to make their point. They are sold as a pair.
