A pair of Napoleon III poufs from France, late 19th century, later reupholstered in bold leopard printed fabric. Each has a circular drum form topped with plush leopard upholstery and wrapped in original plum colored drapery with period tassels and decorative fringe. The bases retain their original casters for easy movement. The palette is rich and tactile, with layered trimming that creates an opulent and feminine look. Condition is good with timeworn fringe, slight toning to the fabric, and age appropriate wear to the casters.
Rooted in Second Empire taste, these stools embody the opulent decorative language of the Napoleon III period, when swags, tassels, fringe, and theatrical upholstery brought movement and richness to salons and boudoirs. Poufs like these were commonly used as movable seats or footrests, easily rolled near a sofa or dressing table. Their later leopard covering recalls the spirit of Madeleine Castaing (1894–1992), the influential French decorator known for mixing bold patterns, saturated colors, and historic French furniture.
These poufs bring instant atmosphere to a sitting room or dressing area. Place them by a fireplace for impromptu seating, slide them at the foot of a bed, or use them as occasional perches to slip on shoes, adding boudoir elegance to a dressing area. Their mobility allows for easy rearrangement, while the patina adds depth and character to both classic and eclectic interiors.
Condition and patina consistent with age.
