This charming pair of brass two-light bouillotte or adjustable desk lamps were originally used with candles during the nineteenth century, France, before being electrified. Note the pretty curved and molded handle which would have been used to easily transport the candle lights from room to room.
The shades were made to be adjustable so that as the candles burn and get smaller, the shade could follow the flame. Note this pair features crackles in the painted tole shades exposing the silvery metal beneath and aging to the patina on the interior of the shades. A charming pair to add history and symmetry to your office or library. The Bouillotte is a French card game that appeared in the eighteenth century and is based on three of a kind.
It was very popular during the French Revolution and again for a few years beginning in 1830. It was then also popular in the United States. The bowl-shaped base allowed players could place their pawns on it. Wired for European power. Note one on of the pairs, the candle-style socket covers are upside down. This will be corrected prior to dispatch.
