Pair of Directoire Period Giltwood Pier Mirrors w/ Distinct Frame Details - 80" x 40¼"

A striking pair of French Directoire giltwood pier mirrors from the late 18th century, distinguished by their elegant proportions and finely detailed neoclassical decoration. Each mirror is framed by a gilt border carved with vine leaves and grape clusters on a pale painted ground, with lion-mask corner blocks at the lower corners. Subtle variations in the outer borders and lower rails give each mirror its own character while maintaining a harmonious overall balance.

The original two-part mercury glass plates remain beautifully luminous, with the characteristic horizontal join typical of period mirrors still visible. Gentle foxing, minor areas of desilvering, and light age-related wear contribute to their authentic patina and historic charm. The sides retain their faux-marble decoration, and the frames display expected signs of age, including minor restorations, small losses to the gilding, and age cracks to the gesso. 

Dating from the refined Directoire period, these mirrors combine elegant neoclassical lines with a beautifully aged patina. Their clean architectural forms are softened by carved vine motifs and mellow gilding. Whether placed together to enhance light and scale or used separately in different rooms, they bring a sense of balance, depth, and understated grandeur to an interior.
