A petite pair of early 19th century round miniatures in giltwood frames. Each small scene sits beneath glass within stepped circular moldings. The images appear to be hand-colored engravings depicting playful, slightly risqué domestic moments in soft blues, ochres, and warm browns, details that reveal themselves on closer inspection. The frames retain gold leaf over gesso with hints of red bole showing through where the surface has worn, creating a mellow glow. The finish appears to have been refreshed with gilt paint in places. Condition is good, with gentle wear to the gilding and light age toning and small specks to the paper.
Such intimate scenes were popular in the early 19th century, when small hand-colored prints with a discreetly mischievous tone were enjoyed in private interiors. Their modest scale invites close viewing, offering a quiet moment of wit and narrative.
The pair adds a subtle note of French romance to a powder room, flanking a bed, or within a gallery wall where their round silhouettes provide a pleasing contrast to rectangular frames.
Condition and patina consistent with age.
