The seats are raised on tapering, splayed legs joined by turned stretchers with a central baluster detail. Each has a warm honey-toned hand-caned seat that contrasts beautifully with the dark finish, which, depending on the light, reveals subtle mahogany undertones along the legs and backs. With scattered surface wear and small age cracks and restorations consistent with age and use, this pair retains an appealing antique character that enhances their airy, elegant presence.

Conceived in the early 1800s by Giuseppe Gaetano Descalzi in the coastal town of Chiavari, the Chiavari chair became an emblem of Italian ingenuity for its extraordinary lightness and elegant neoclassical lines.
