Pair of petite rustic milking stools in stained softwood, likely pine or fir, from eastern France or the French Alps, late 19th to early 20th century. Each has a rectangular seat with gently shaped sides and a hand slot, set on splayed plank ends joined by a stretcher. Built with pegged tenons and a warm honey-brown patina, they show wear and marks consistent with age. Practical and charming, these petite stools embody traditional Alpine craftsmanship and bring authentic rural character to a kitchen, entryway, or living space.
The pair can serve as low side tables by a sofa, bedside stands for books, or plant stands that bring warmth to a window niche. Their modest scale allows them to tuck neatly under a console, line a hearth for candles, or add a rustic note in a bath to present toiletries. Equally practical as small step stools, they retain the versatility of their original purpose. Their authentic patina harmonizes effortlessly with farmhouse, lodge, and pared-back contemporary interiors alike.
