Pair of Early 20th-Century Venetian Engraved-Mirror Sconces - 11¾" x 8¾"

This petite pair of French Venetian-style reflector sconces, dating from the early 20th century, draws on the tradition of 18th-century Venetian mirrors made in Murano. Each sconce has an asymmetrical cartouche-shaped mirrored backplate, edged with curving clear glass and engraved with scrolling foliage. Two clear-glass arms sweep outward from the base to support candle-style lights, while faceted glass rosettes punctuate the frame and discreetly conceal the fixing points. The mirrors have developed gentle desilvering and age-related mottling, giving the reflective surfaces a softly time-worn character that complements the delicacy of the glasswork.

The pair has been carefully restored in Saint-Rémy-de-Provence by a specialist in historic lighting, and the sconces are fitted with fireproof faux candle sleeves and dimmable flame-effect bulbs.

Once lit, the engraved mirrors catch and multiply the candlelight, bringing a lively sparkle to the room. Flanking a mirror, vanity or bed, they would bring a softly romantic character while remaining light and airy.
