A pair of late nineteenth century French metal candlesticks with a warm bronze toned patina. Each is formed as a cherub raising its arms to support a fluted drip pan and leaf decorated candle socket. The figure stands on a tripod base with scrolling foliage and small masks, giving the piece a strong sculptural presence. The surface shows a deep brown tone with soft highlights on the raised areas. Unmarked, in very good condition with an aged patina, light wear, slight oxidation, and traces of old candle wax consistent with use.
The design draws on the revival styles popular in the late nineteenth century, blending playful cherub figures inspired by Rococo ornament with the balanced tripod forms of classical decorative arts. The result is both theatrical and refined.
With their animated figures and tall, balanced form, this pair of candlesticks brings movement and sculptural presence to a mantel, dining table, or console. Pair them with a gilt mirror or framed tapestry for a layered classical vignette, or let them punctuate a contemporary setting with a quiet note of 19th-century romance.
Condition and patina consistent with age.
