Pair of Exuberant French Floral Paintings w/ Exotic Birds, Late 19th Century - 31½" x 38½"

This elegant pair of late nineteenth-century oils on canvas captures the dramatic, luminous spirit of eighteenth-century decorative painting, combining exuberant floral still lifes with exotic parrots in richly atmospheric compositions. Overflowing urns of roses, tulips, peonies, and cascading blossoms are set against softly painted grounds in olive, ochre, and umber tones, animated by a vivid green parrot in one painting and a striking white cockatoo in the other. The shaped reserves painted within the rectangular canvases evoke the form of overdoor panels, suggesting they may originally have been intended for shaped frames or decorative architectural settings. Unsigned. 

Richly layered yet beautifully balanced as pendants, the compositions glow with warmth, movement, and painterly depth.  Presented in simple giltwood frames whose gilding remains beautifully bright, the paintings intriguingly feature a delicately painted craquelure effect intended to imitate the appearance of age, perhaps to evoke the texture of frescoed wall panels or to lend the works a greater sense of historical character.
