A petite pair of baluster vases in enameled bronze, China, 20th century. The bodies swell gently above trumpet necks with brass rims and circular feet, all enriched with a luminous turquoise ground patterned with a repeating meander-pattern ground. Peony blooms in red, white, yellow, and blue rise on leafy branches picked out with fine gilt wires, giving depth and movement to the surface. The technique, perfected in China from the Ming period onward, lends a jewel-like sheen and crisp delineation to the motifs, while the peony symbolizes prosperity and honor. Condition is good, with small chips to the enamel and light wear and scratches to the rims and bases consistent with age.
Graceful in scale and vivid in color, this pair brings a refined accent to a mantel, console, or bedside. Display them symmetrically on open shelving, group with books and scholar’s objects, or style each as a bud vase with a single branch to echo the floral design. Their luminous turquoise ground, enriched with gilt details and vibrant floral motifs, brings a fresh yet timeless decorative presence to both classic and contemporary interiors.
Condition and patina consistent with age.
