Pair of Framed French Hand-Colored Engravings after Claude Joseph Vernet, Late 18th Century - 16½" x 21¼"

This pair of hand-colored engravings depicts two views of the countryside surrounding Bayonne, after compositions by the celebrated French marine painter Claude Joseph Vernet (1714–1789) and engraved by Jean-Jacques Le Veau (1729–1786). Delicately heightened with hand applied colors, the scenes combine coastal topography with animated figures: one shows fishermen working along the shore beneath rugged fortifications, with a sailing vessel beyond, while the other depicts fishermen and elegantly dressed figures gathered beside the water near a fortified tower. The prints are preserved under glass in period giltwood frames, and retain labels from a 19th century Parisian framer on the reverse. Scattered foxing and moisture staining are visible, consistent with age and giving the paper a gently mottled, time-worn appearance. 

Vernet was one of the leading French landscape painters of the 18th century, celebrated for his atmospheric compositions combining nature, architecture, and figures. His works were widely reproduced as engravings, including these finely detailed views by Jean-Jacques Le Veau. The scenes reflect the period’s fascination with landscape as both a representation of place and a setting for human activity. Like the work of Hubert Robert and other artists of the period, they place fishermen, travelers, ruins, and architecture within expansive natural surroundings, blending observation with a picturesque, sometimes imagined quality. Such engravings also responded to a growing interest in the distinctive landscapes and monuments of different regions of France.

Their softly aged colors, architectural detail, and picturesque landscapes create a refined sense of history, with the warm giltwood frames lending definition and depth to each composition. The surviving hand coloring and visible patina enhance their atmospheric quality, while the complementary scenes form a particularly harmonious pair.
