Pair of French Animalier Recumbent Lions in Patinated Bronze, Late 19th Century - 20½"

A handsome pair of late 19th-century French recumbent lion sculptures in bronze with a rich brown-black patina, modeled with finely detailed manes, expressive faces, and naturalistic musculature in the Animalier tradition. Each lion rests on a naturalistic rocky base set upon a black stone plinth, whose clean, architectural lines provide a restrained counterpoint to the richly modeled bronze.  Unsigned, the pair remains in very good condition, with light wear to the patina and a few small nicks and abrasions to the stone bases consistent with age.

Inspired by Antoine-Louis Barye (1795-1875) and the French Animalier movement that flourished under his influence, these recumbent lions reflect the 19th century's fascination with naturalistic animal sculpture. Barye's masterful studies of anatomy transformed the genre and inspired generations of French bronze founders. Symbols of strength and vigilance, companion lions were especially prized for flanking mantels, consoles, and entrances. 

The pair possesses a timeless sculptural quality, equally at home in traditional and contemporary interiors. Beautifully modeled from every angle, they lend a subtle sense of strength and quiet nobility to any setting.
