This pair of French concrete garden ducks has a wonderfully weathered, almost storybook presence, shaped as much by years outdoors as by their original modeling. Likely dating from the mid-20th century, each is molded in a resting pose on an oval base, with softly defined feathers, painted eyes and remnants of yellow paint still visible on the beaks. The bases retain traces of old green and blue paint, probably intended to suggest water. A shallow depression is formed into the back of each duck and may originally have been intended to hold a small amount of planting. Their outlines and details have softened considerably with age, with a few small losses visible, but these irregularities are very much part of their charm. Dense moss, lichen and mineral deposits have built up across the surfaces, creating a superb natural patina and giving the pair the appearance of having long belonged to the garden.
The simple, slightly naïve modeling and richly mossed surfaces give the ducks a gentle, nostalgic character. They would feel especially at home beside a pond or fountain, but would be equally charming on a covered terrace or even an entry console, where they bring an unexpected touch of old garden character indoors.
