A beautiful pair of French oil lamps dating to around 1900, with well-proportioned ceramic bodies set on cast brass bases with rocaille-style decoration. Each lamp is hand-painted on a soft beige ground with delicate wildflowers and songbirds perched on branches, highlighted with touches of gilding that catch the light with a gentle warmth. One lamp has a subtly lighter ground, and the flowers vary slightly in tone between the two, reflecting their hand-crafted nature. The glaze has developed a fine overall craquelure, giving the surface depth and a softly luminous quality. Both lamps retain their original brass fittings and glass chimneys. Small areas of oxidation are visible on the brass, consistent with age and adding to the overall patina.
Presented in decorative condition as found, they could be electrified if desired. Placed on a mantelpiece, console, or flanking a sideboard, they bring a gentle yet lively presence.
Condition and patina consistent with age.
