This charming pair of plaster wall medallions dates from around 1900 and features matching reliefs of two winged cherubs reclining among swirling clouds and holding garlands of flowers. Each panel has an elongated, gently shaped outline framed by molded scrollwork in the Rococo style. Originally conceived as overdoor decorations for the interiors of grand bourgeois homes, they are finished in soft ivory white, with subtle differences in patina that give each its own character. There is some light surface wear and discoloration consistent with age, and both retain hooks on the back for hanging.
These lovely decorative panels have a romantic, slightly opulent quality, with beautifully modeled figures and generous floral details. Their matching design makes them especially appealing for decorating a pair of doorways, perhaps above bedroom doors in a hallway or dressing room. They would also look beautiful displayed together above a bed or along the walls of a bedroom, adding a little of the charm and refinement of an old French interior.
Condition and patina consistent with age.
