Pair of Handmade Stoneware Cups with White Glaze

From Patricia and Walter's farmhouse and cooking school in Vaison-la-Romaine, this pair of handmade stoneware cups is as considered as everything else at Chanteduc — functional, beautiful and made to be used together.

Each cup is hand-thrown in a warm sandy stoneware clay, left unglazed from the base to roughly mid-height, where a milky white glaze takes over and carries through to the rim. The contrast is direct: raw, biscuit-coloured clay below; smooth, slightly luminous white above. The form is cylindrical with a gentle taper — handleless, sturdy and comfortable to hold with both hands on a cool Provençal morning. The maker's mark is lightly impressed into the unglazed base of each cup. They are a matched pair, though with the small natural variations that only handmade work produces.

Patricia has long collected white ceramics and serveware, and these cups sit naturally within that sensibility — objects that are visually coherent and genuinely useful, at home on a well-laid table or a kitchen shelf. The scale suits a generous espresso or a short café crème equally well. Display them together on an open shelf, or set them out each morning as a small, considered ritual — two cups, side by side, ready.
