A striking pair of Italian giltwood and crystal wall sconces, likely Venetian, dating to the 1940s. Each sconce features an elegant carved and gilded central support surmounted by a delicate wire coronet and issuing three scrolling candle arms. Cascades of faceted clear glass beads drape gracefully from the frame, while crystal and glass pendants of varied shapes lend movement and sparkle. The mellow gilt finish has developed a beautiful patina over time, enhancing their romantic character. Condition is very good, with minor oxidation to the metal elements, light wear to the candle sleeves, a few tiny chips to some prisms, and occasional later replacements among the hanging drops, all consistent with age and use.
Rich in decorative presence, these sconces bring instant glamour and old-world elegance to an interior. Whether flanking a mirror, doorway, or bed, they create a dramatic play of light and reflection, whether illuminated or not. The combination of warm gilding and shimmering glass and crystal complements both classical and contemporary interiors, pairing beautifully with antique furniture, Venetian mirrors, painted finishes, and richly layered decorative schemes.
Condition and patina consistent with age.
