This decorative pair of giltwood wall sconces, likely Italian and dating from the early 20th century, is designed in the graceful Rococo Revival style. Their elongated, scrolling frames are arranged as a symmetrical pair, with carved C-scrolls ornament and a warm gilt surface showing gentle wear and variation from age. Each sconce supports two metal light arms, decorated with cut metal leaf motifs. Their tall, narrow proportions are give the pair an elegant vertical presence without appearing heavy.
The sconces retain an older electrical fitting with small-bulb sockets and should be checked and, if necessary, rewired by a qualified electrician before use. Small hooks to the backs allow them to be easily wall mounted, and despite their height they are lightweight.
They would work particularly well flanking a mirror or doorway, or on each side of a bed, bringing a refined Rococo note to an interior.
Condition and patina consistent with age.
