A handsome pair of French Régence-style walnut fauteuils dating from the late 19th century. Richly carved with shells, acanthus leaves, and flowing rocaille motifs, they feature gracefully curved arms, broad seats, and high, upright backs that provide excellent support. The walnut has developed a deep, warm patina over time. Stripped back to their foundation fabric, the chairs are ready to be upholstered, offering an ideal opportunity to tailor them to suit any interior. The carved walnut frames remain in very good condition, with crisp, well-preserved carving throughout. The backs retain old upholstery tack holes along the edges, which could be hidden beneath the new upholstery.
Celebrated for its flowing curves, sculptural carving, and greater emphasis on comfort, the Régence style emerged during the transition from Louis XIV to Louis XV in the early 18th century. These late 19th-century example faithfully reinterpret that elegant vocabulary while offering the advantage of well-preserved frames that remain fully suitable for everyday use.
Ready to be upholstered in the fabric of your choice, they offer the opportunity to create a bespoke pair that feels equally at home in a traditional country house or a clean-lined contemporary interior. Whether placed in a living room, library, bedroom, or entrance hall, they bring warmth, elegance, and enduring French character to any space.
