Pair of Large French Wrought-Iron Candelabra, Early 20th Century - 25¼"

A pair of large French wrought-iron candelabra, likely dating from the early 20th century, each designed to hold four candles, with three curving arms arranged around a central stem. Their elaborate construction combines twisted stems and arms with scrolling ironwork, foliate elements, and motifs resembling stylized fleurs-de-lis, all raised on broad tripod bases formed from further curling scrolls. An old pale verdigris painted finish survives beneath extensive oxidation and areas of loss, creating a particularly atmospheric, mottled surface of faded color, exposed iron, and rust. Remnants of electrical wiring indicate that the pair was electrified at some point, although they were probably originally made for candles. Substantial without being excessively heavy, the pair has a strong presence but remains visually light. 

Their height and open, airy construction give them a strong decorative presence, while the layered patina keeps the effect relaxed. Used with candles on a grand dining table or left unlit on an entry console, their oxidized blue-green surface and elaborate ironwork bring a touch of the wonderfully romantic atmosphere of an old French country estate.
