This pair of Genoese three-light wall sconces, dating from around 1900, combines carved and painted wood with gilded accents, slender metal light arms and tiers of scrolling metalwork enriched with cascades of faceted glass drops. Swags of glass beads link the different levels, while larger cut-glass pendants and smaller drops hang from the extremities, catching the light and adding movement. The pair is richly decorated, but the open framework keeps the effect visually light.
That balance of giltwood, fine metalwork and suspended glass is characteristic of the Genoese decorative tradition, creating sparkle and ornament without visual heaviness. The softened gilding and painted surfaces, with scattered small losses, add warmth and a convincing sense of age. They would work beautifully flanking a mirror, large painting or bed, where the symmetry of the pair could frame the focal point and add height, shimmer and an elegant sense of rhythm.
