This pair of late 19th-century wrought-iron garden chairs has an elegant, open design with slender, curved legs and decorative backs formed from scrolling ironwork arranged in a heart-shaped motif. The seats are made from interlaced iron strips, with visible riveted joints adding to their handcrafted character. Both chairs have developed a rich, fairly even rust patina in warm reddish-brown tones. A small welded repair is visible on one backrest. The weathered surface is particularly attractive, although the rust may stain clothing or flooring, so the chairs are recommended primarily for decorative outdoor use.
Their graceful curves, openwork seats and warm rusted finish give these chairs a pleasing sculptural presence. They would look particularly charming on a sheltered terrace, against an old garden wall or among potted plants, where their aged surfaces would sit naturally alongside stone, terracotta and greenery. Displayed together, they bring a touch of romantic, slightly rustic character to a garden setting.
Condition and patina consistent with age.
