A beautiful pair of French Louis XV period armchairs dating from the mid-18th century. Their distinctive silhouette is defined by tall, elegantly shaped cartouche backs rising above unusually low, generously proportioned seats, creating a striking sense of verticality. Gracefully curved arms flare gently outwards, while the short cabriole legs reinforce their inviting, low-slung profile. The beautifully weathered original green lacquer has mellowed over centuries of use. They have been beautifully reupholstered in an elegant ivory floral damask with generous feather-filled loose cushions.
The original ladder-back construction with its shaped horizontal rails is visible from the reverse and suggests these chairs were likely originally made as simple rush-seated country fireside armchairs. They appear to have been sympathetically converted at a later date, preserving their original 18th-century frames while creating comfortable upholstered seating.
Their elegant palette and graceful proportions lend a gentle decorative presence to both traditional and contemporary interiors. Their unusually low profile makes them ideal as occasional seating in a sitting room, bedroom, or dressing room. The reverse, which reveals the original ladder-back construction, is equally appealing, making them particularly well suited to float within a room rather than sit against a wall.
Condition and patina consistent with age.
