Pair of French two-light wall sconces attributed to Maison Baguès, circa 1950s to early 1960s. Each sconce features a clear crystal parrot perched on a faceted crystal backplate, issuing scrolling gilt-metal arms with petal-form drip pans and faux-wax candle sleeves over ribbed crystal collars. Sprays of crystal rosettes and silver-leafed glass leaves add a delicate shimmer, the palette a refined mix of gilt, clear crystal, and soft silver. Unsigned, as many workshop pieces were, the pair presents in very good condition with timeworn gilding, light oxidation to the metal, and minor rubbing to the silvering on a few leaves, the crystal elements appearing bright and intact.
The design reflects the celebrated savoir-faire of mid-century French lighting, where Maison Baguès married botanical naturalism with a glamorous, jewel-like surface. Founded in 1840 and renowned by the interwar and postwar years, the house produced gilt-bronze and crystal fixtures for grand hotels and chic interiors, often employing verre églomisé or silver-backed crystal leaves and sculpted birds, known as perroquets, as signature motifs. These sconces sit comfortably between late Art Deco refinement and the spirited elegance later termed Hollywood Regency, showcasing the meticulous hand-finishing and luxurious materials associated with Parisian ateliers of the period.
Ideal as a symmetrical pair flanking a mirror or mantel, they bring sparkle and gentle whimsy to an entry, dining room, or bedroom. The warm gilt and silvery leaves bridge traditional paneling and modern plaster walls alike, while the crystal parrots introduce a sculptural focal point without visual heaviness. They read as petite to medium in scale, making them versatile accents for layered, collected interiors.
