This pair of mid-20th century garden planters is crafted in fibercement, their undulating, sculptural rims forming organic, shell-like or folded handkerchief silhouettes. The surfaces are richly weathered, showing a mottled blend of soft grays and greens, enriched with areas of moss patina that highlight their long outdoor life. One planter shows an old repair at a corner. Planters of this type reflect the innovative spirit of post war modernist garden design, often associated with designers such as Willy Guhl, who explored the expressive potential of fibercement. Lightweight yet durable, the material allowed for free, flowing shapes that contrasted with traditional terracotta or stone vessels.
These sculptural jardinieres embody the mid-century blending of utility and avant-garde aesthetics, conceived to harmonize with both natural settings and modern architectural environments. Placed on a terrace, in a garden, or within a conservatory, they bring sculptural interest and an authentic sense of age. Their mossy patina and modernist form make them equally at home in rustic, eclectic, or minimalist surroundings.
Note: May have been made with asbestos - therefore, we advise that they are displayed outside or in a well-ventilated room. The patina mustn't be modified.
