A sculptural pair of Italian Baroque Revival eleven-light candelabra from the early 20th century, hand-wrought in iron and zinc and originally gilded. Each rises from a generous circular base with a petal-like apron to a baluster stem, unfurling into a dramatic canopy of scrolling arms adorned with pierced bobeches and applied foliate details. The composition is both abundant and airy, substantial in scale yet graceful in line. The surfaces retain a beautifully moody patina, with rubbed gilding layered over olive and umber oxidation, and faint traces of candle wax settled into the chased ornament.
Timeworn and evocative, with age-softened gilding, scattered oxidation, minor irregular bends to a few arms, and small losses, all stable and consistent with age, they possess the quiet grandeur that only time can bestow.
They make a powerful statement flanking a large mirror on a substantial console, anchoring either end of a long dining table, or placed atop pedestals in a grand entry. They would also be striking in a guest bedroom on generous bedside tables, where their moody patina and sculptural presence create an enveloping, romantic atmosphere. Even unlit, they read as luminous sculpture.
Condition and patina consistent with age.
