This charming pair of low French Napoleon III fireside chairs, dating from the second half of the 19th century, features an elaborate neoclassical design inspired by Louis XVI furniture. Their gilded wooden frames have short fluted legs, tall turned uprights topped with finials, and oval upholstered backs crowned with carved ornament. The original floral fabric, in soft shades of pink, cream and green, also covers the generously padded seats, finished with narrow red trim. The chairs retain their original gilding, with areas of later regilding creating lovely variations in tone. The original upholstery shows some fading and light marks consistent with age, but remains in lovely condition overall, with no major stains or tears. One backrest has some movement, and the pair is recommended for decorative use.
There is something delightfully theatrical about these little chairs, with their elaborate gilded frames, romantic floral upholstery and almost ceremonial appearance. Their low seats and tall, slender backs give them particularly charming proportions. They would look beautiful flanking a bed in a bedroom or a small console in a dressing room. Their playful, slightly extravagant character would also make them a lovely addition to a more contemporary interior, where they could provide an unexpected contrast.
