A handsome pair of late 18th-century French Medici garden urns in cast iron, of classical campana form with flared rims, rounded bodies, and square plinth bases. The rims and bases retain traces of an early duck-egg blue paint, while the bodies, once painted cream, have acquired a richly developed rust patina through decades of exposure to the elements. The resulting surface is wonderfully nuanced, with warm tones of ochre, cinnamon, and iron red contrasting against the cooler remnants of blue. Pierced for drainage, the urns remain sturdy and functional, with age-related wear and weathering consistent with their long outdoor life.
The appeal of this pair lies in its remarkable surface. The restrained Medici silhouette allows the richly weathered patina to take center stage, with traces of duck-egg blue paint remaining on the rims and bases while the bodies have developed a deep rust-colored finish through decades of exposure. The contrast between the surviving paint and natural oxidation creates a richly layered surface that gives the urns warmth, texture, and unmistakable authenticity. The overall effect is both sculptural and painterly, bringing warmth, texture, and a sense of permanence to a garden, terrace, or interior space.
A similar pair of the same model with a comparable layered surface and a slightly gentler patina is also available separately here, allowing for a harmonious series of four to bring rhythm, balance, and architectural presence to an entrance, terrace, or formal garden setting.
Condition and patina consistent with age.
