This exceptional pair of storage ottoman trunks is attributed to Italian architect and interior designer Lorenzo ‘Renzo’ Mongiardino (1916–1998), and perfectly captures the theatrical romance and historical erudition that defined his interiors. Celebrated as the architect of glamour and illusion, Mongiardino rejected the stark constraints of modern minimalism in favor of a sumptuous, operatic aesthetic that layered deep textures, historical references, and meticulous craftsmanship, and he became the definitive master of late 20th-century luxury, maximalist decor. His prestigious client list included Gianni Versace, Gianni and Marella Agnelli, Aristotle Onassis, Lee Radziwill, Valentino Garavani, and the Rothschild family.
Here, deeply button-tufted velvet seats in a warm terracotta tone are paired with elaborate passementerie: tiered bullion fringe and suspended tassels wrap the lower perimeter, giving the pieces a sense of movement and an almost architectural presence. Beneath the upholstered tops, each ottoman opens like a trunk to reveal generous concealed storage. This combination of decorative richness and practical function makes the pair particularly versatile. They could be placed at the foot of twin beds for storing linens; beneath windows or large-scale artwork in an entrance hall; or in a spacious bathroom or dressing room, where they could hold towels and textiles while providing low seating. Wherever they are placed, these benches lend an immediate tone of collected sophistication.
As vintage pieces with a rich history, the seats currently show some stains and minor wear. They would greatly benefit from a light, professional cleaning to fully restore the velvet to its original, luminous luster. For clients seeking a pedigree of timeless Italian design, this pair serves as a masterful anchor that beautifully bridges classical antiquarian charm with functional contemporary living.
