This commanding pair of oversized Italian grotesque masks dates to the 1960s and is cast in plaster with a chalky white finish. Each face is boldly modeled with coiled curls, hollowed eyes, and open mouths, the animated relief enlivened by expressive, hand-worked surfaces.
Raised on simple plinth stands, the masks draw directly from the antique tradition of theatrical masks, recalling the exaggerated visages of Greek and Roman drama, where character, emotion, and satire were conveyed through stylized physiognomy. Reimagined through a mid-century decorative lens, this classical lineage is distilled into a striking sculptural form that balances historic reference with modern abstraction.
The surface bears deliberate abrasions and controlled losses, intentionally incorporated by the artist to echo the fragmentary condition of antique theatrical masks; rather than detracting, these details enhance the pair’s sculptural presence and reinforce their dialogue with classical models. Impressive in scale yet light in tone, the pair brings drama and wit to an interior. Place them together on a console, mantel, or entry table where their pale surfaces will create a vivid contrast against a painted background, or flank a mirror to anchor a gallery wall.
Condition and patina consistent with age.
