A petite pair of 19th-century French bronze cupids, each seated on a rustic stump and raised on polished oval black marble bases with delicate white veining. The bronzes bear a rich chocolate-brown repatinated surface that accentuates their finely chased details, from the tight curls and feathered wings to the textured ground beneath them. One cupid wears a sweet, almost mischievous smile, his head tilted as though sharing a secret, while the other sits more pensively, gazing down at the arrow he holds, his curly head bowed in quiet concentration and his little wings folded at his back. Together, their contrasting postures, one lively and open and the other contemplative and serene, form a charming dialogue of innocence and emotion.
Signed Lemire (1741–1827), these bronzes are most likely late 19th-century reeditions, reflecting the continued popularity of the sculptor’s designs. The subject and tender poses bring a romantic Rococo spirit to a bedroom mantel, a boudoir console, or the end sections of a bookcase. In a child’s room or nursery, their playful innocence and gentle expressions add a touch of charm and warmth without overwhelming the space.
