Pair of Petite Early 20th Century Murano Venetian Glass Mirror Reflectors w/ Etched Figures - 11" x 8"

A petite pair of Venetian glass mirror reflectors, likely Murano, early 20th century, Italy. Each is shield-shaped with a silvered mirror plate bordered by clear rope-twist glass, finished with applied glass flowers at the crest, shoulders, and base. The plates are delicately etched with figures in period dress: one of a lady holding a fan, the other of a gentleman. A double aperture at the lower edge was intended to receive sconce arms or candles. The glass remains clear and bright, while the silvering has softly mellowed. These reflectors follow the long Venetian tradition of handcrafted mirrorwork that flourished on Murano, where lampworked borders, rosettes, and floral appliqués were assembled over shaped mirror plates. Their form echoes Baroque and Rococo outlines favored in Venice since the 18th century, revived around 1900 for intimate interiors and boudoirs.

Designed to sit behind a light, they were made to amplify and diffuse candlelight or early electric bulbs, creating a shimmering halo through the combination of mirrored surface and sculpted glass ornament. They style beautifully as a symmetrical pair flanking a console, dressing mirror, or doorway, or layered within a wall of antique frames to introduce sparkle and texture. Use them as intended behind slim candle sconces in a powder room or hallway, where the reflective plates will brighten the area without overwhelming it.
